Diethyleneglycol diformate #CAS120570-77-6

Diethylene glycol dibenzoate (C18H18O5, CAS No. 120-55-8, molecular weight 314.33) is a colorless, oily, transparent liquid with a density of 1.1751 g/cm³, a boiling point of 235-237℃, a flash point of 232℃, and is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in organic solvents. It is mainly used as a plasticizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinyl acetate (PVC) resins, and is suitable for PVC flooring, cable materials, adhesives, and synthetic rubber processing. Its compatibility and processing performance with PVC resin are superior to traditional plasticizers such as DOP and DBP. It can directly replace traditional plasticizers in artificial leather, films, pipes, and other products without requiring process adjustments. The synthesis method uses diethylene glycol and benzoic acid as raw materials through an esterification reaction. The raw material consumption quota is 400 kg/t of diethylene glycol and 900 kg/t of benzoic acid. The oral LD50 in rats is 544 mg/kg. It is a low-toxicity substance and should be stored in a sealed, cool place in iron drums.

Application of Diethyleneglycol diformate

Diethylene glycol dibenzoate (DEDB) outperforms DOP and DBP in several key parameters, while also possessing advantages such as high plasticizing efficiency, low toxicity, good polymer compatibility, low volatility, low exudation, large filler capacity, and high gloss in finished products. Its performance is comparable to DOP, making it a suitable primary plasticizer for many resins, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinyl acetate (PVC).

With the rapid development of the plastics industry, the demand for plasticizers is increasing year by year. Phthalate esters, as plasticizers, account for more than 50% of the market share. After the National Cancer Institute (NCI) suspected DOP of having carcinogenic effects, its use was restricted, leading to the search for and research of safer and better-performing substitutes. International food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical regulatory authorities consider DEDB a relatively safe plasticizer or other additive suitable for use in food contact packaging materials.

DEDB and DOP have very similar performance characteristics and can be widely used in the plastics manufacturing industry, including artificial leather, footwear, films, flooring, flexible and rigid pipes, and cable materials. Years of practical experience have proven that DEDB has a high-speed dissolution capability for PVC, effectively shortening processing and plasticizing times. With filler, its tensile strength is 20% higher, and its mechanical properties are superior to DOP. Products made with DEDB have a smooth, bright surface, good mechanical stability, and good gloss. It improves the flexibility, thermal distortion, and toughness and adhesion of products, exhibiting high plasticizing efficiency, good compatibility, and resistance to oxidation and volatilization. It also inhibits the exudation of oils and fats.

This product exhibits superior compatibility with PVC resin compared to DOP and DBP, and has a higher flash point than DOP. Therefore, it has a wide range of applications in PVC plastic films, calendered artificial leather, plastic sandals, foam slippers, PVC cable materials, rubber soles, foamed PVC shoe materials, rubber shoe materials, door, window, and vehicle/ship sealing strips, PVC profiles, flexible sheets, various flexible and rigid pipes, PVC heat-shrink film, PVC twisted film, PVC sheets, decorative materials, foamed rigid sheets, and all other products using plasticizers. It can completely replace DOP, DBP, and DHP in PVC products without requiring changes to processing conditions.
